Ercol:
In our honest opinion the best show-wood furniture being made commercially in the UK today.
At Day's of Oswestry we can attest to the extraordinary care and crasftsmanship built into this furniture. They use the very best hardwoods, especially grown for the company and are leaders in design.
Ercol furniture probably more than any other lends itself to replacement covers, cushion interiors and reupholstery. A lot of care, and attention and first class material has goes into the frame which lasts for years and years.
With most of the models being a beautifully crafted frame with loose cushions or cushions attached by studs, and so complete soft furnishing refurbishment is relatively simple to achieve.
If your cushion interiors are in good condition you will simply need new covers, although covers with replacement interiors will bring the furniture up to showroom comfort. Replacement rubber webs are also available if these are showing signs of wear.
Reupholstery for Ercol is mostly a question of repolishing the frame before fitting new webbing, covers and cushions. The wood is such a jey feature of this furniture that if the original polish has become damaged or worn away, repolishing will reinvigorate the showroom look to the piece.
Polishing:
When we repolish wood as part of our reupholstery service, the old polish is completely stripped off by hand (it is not dipped in a tank which would damage all joints).
The wood is then hand sanded down to the bare wood to give a good foundation for the polish. As you can imagine, it takes hours to carefully sand down the 'sticks' which characterise many Ercol models. Only once the wood is properly prepared is the wood hand polished in a manner similar to the original piece.
